The Best of Green Lanes

Green Lanes is basically my second home; my three best friends live there so I'm pretty much in the area all the time. It's one of my favorite areas in London and I think if you don't know about it it's time to get to know. Expect to find quirky bars and the best of London's Turkish restaurants in this jam packed place. I've decided to write about my two favorite bars, along with my two favorite restaurants and two of the best green spaces in lovely London.

Kick starting with my three fave bars along Green Lanes...

1) Brouhaha
You gotta laugh at the title but this small bar makes a fantastic cocktail and date spot. It's got a roof terrace which is incredible in summer, however it shuts at 8pm so get there early to enjoy the sunset and a cocktail. They also have a sushi restaurant in the back which is delicious and affordable. I think they've made a genius decision there: cocktails and sushi- what could be better?

2) Bun and Bar
This place serves my favorite cocktail in the whole of London: the Basil Sour. It's got the aromas of basil and gin and is oh so tasty. Another great bar for cocktails and reasonably priced ranging between £6-8. My one issue with this place is that I don't think the food is great so I would only come here for drinks. However, if you stick to the drinks then you're in good hands and a good night.

Now onto the food...

1) Selale
This has to be my favorite restaurant along Green Lanes. You're given complimentary salad, hummus and tsatziki and it makes the best start to a great meal. The menu is huge and offers Pides (Turkish Pizza), salads, fish and succulent melt in the mouth kebabs. I would recommend getting a small Lamb shish. The lamb is so tender and goes so well with the salad that they give you. After divulging in an incredible kebab you're given a free desert and Turkish tea; it makes the perfect end to a lovely meal.

2) Antepliler
Another Turkish restaurant, but for me that's what Green Lanes is all about. I think the quality of the meat is better here and lets face it, that's what its all about when you want a kebab. I would suggest going with a big group of people so that you can get the meat platter and give it all a try. It's a great deal for your money coming to about £30 for piles of meat. Expect chicken shish, chicken donner, lamb shish, lamb donner and ribs. Yum!

As I said Green Lanes is a busy place so it can be nice to take a breather sometimes and luckily there are two fantastic green spaces near by.

1) Finsbury Park
Host of Wireless festival, Finsbury Park is surprisingly big and a great place to go for a walk or a sunbath. It's nice to step away from the business surrounding it and enjoy the nature for a bit. There's also a small cafe by the pond where you can watch swans and have a cuppa.

2) The Woodberry Wetlands
This really is one of London's gems. Recently renovated and open to the public you can walk around these reservoirs while enjoying views of the surrounding sky scrapers. You can also see the shard in the distance while you sit relaxing in the cafe overlooking the reservoir.

So that's it, the very best of Green Lanes. This is an area that's very dear to my heart and I think it deserves a bit of credit for how great it is.

5 Cheese Shops Every Cheese-a-holic should head to

As someone who is obsessed with cheese I have spent a fair amount of time sussing out London's most fabulous cheese mongers. There are so many to bring up, but I thought I would go with the five that I return to most frequently. So at number 1: Paxton and Whitfield. Dating back to the 1700s, Paxton and Whitfield is London's oldest cheese shop and stocks amazing cheeses from around the world. I come here annually to buy cheese for Christmas day, and I am unashamed to admit it's probably one of my favorite expeditions of the year. They serve something for everyone from creamy goats cheese to smack you in the face blues. The range is extensive and the staff are happy to help you pick the perfect cheeses to match your pallet and the occasion. Number 2: La Fromagerie. Based in Highbury and Mayfair this cheese shop holds an authentic feel and is the first experience I'd had of a cheese shop. I go to the one in Highbury and Islington as it's local to me and I never...

Recipe of the Week: Taramasalata

As a new feature of my blog I've decided to write a recipe each week. These will vary in terms of if i'm trying to have a healthy week or an indulgent one so you'll certainly get an idea of what's in my food shop- but who doesn't love to be nosey ey? So kick starting the first weekend of 2018 my recipe of the week is homemade taramasalata! Ever since being diagnosed with coeliac I knew this would be the hardest thing to give up. When people ask me what I miss the most they probably expect to hear pizza or fresh bread but that isn't the case for me. Taramasalata is my favorite food ever and since I can't buy it in the shop anymore I've had to learn how to make it myself. For those who aren't familiar with what it is, it's basically a fresh greek dip made from smoked cod roe that is zesty, oniony and really smoky. As my friend Melina describes it it's 'greek caviar but better'; I must admit I agree with her.  The tricky part is...

Porto, Portugal

Ahhh Porto, where to begin? The people were lovely, the place was stunning and the food was exceptional. This was a much needed break after university and the realities of grad life. We started our trip flying with TAP Portugal which is one of the nicest airlines I've ever used.. we got free wine! Once we'd landed we got on the metro to our hotel in Balhou. Porto's metro is like a much nicer tube; it's spacious, air conned and very easy to understand. When coming up the stairs of Balhou station we were greeted by this stunning church (one I'd been hoping to see from my Instagram research) which was breathtaking and set a great tone for the holiday.  Our hotel was alright, but its location was why we chose it; it was nice to be in the heart of Porto and made travelling around so easy. On our first evening we went for a glass of wine (standard) and then a concert of Fado and Flamenco which offered a festive introduction to Portuguese culture. We then wen...
