My Birthday Weekend in Brighton

Luckily for me I have an incredible best friend who was thoughtful and lovely enough to take me away to Brighton for the weekend before my birthday.

I have to admit, I tend to be pretty sceptical of leaving London as I only just moved back and am having a blast. However this weekend blew me away and taught me that it's good to have a break from the big city sometimes.

The main event of our trip was going for a tea for two, something that I never really thought would be offered gluten free yet my friend, Amber, managed to find an incredible coeliac friendly one.
We went to a vegetarian restaurant called Terre De Terre which is a few yards from the sea front. The ambience of the restaurant was lovely and they seated us outside under a golden yellow sun shader.

We requested the gluten free tea for two which is 100% coeliac friendly and comes with one savoury plate, three sweet tiers, a glass of prosecco and a tea all for £30.

I cannot begin to describe how incredible the food was, I'm salivating just thinking about it.
On the savoury plate came wasabi cashews on watercress pesto, aubergine with tahini, ponzo, uzo and miso, corn cakes rolled in spice dust served with avocado hash and mojo jelly and a tapioca cracker topped with pickled vegetables.

This was honestly one of the best plates of foods I have ever had. Mouthful after mouthful my tastebuds were experiencing something new and delicious. The miso aubergine was soft and rich with the texture of tuna tartar and is probably the best aubergine i've ever had. The corn cakes were spiced with aromatic Indian flavors and went perfectly with that avocado hash. The tapioca cracker was light, sort of like a prawn cracker and was gorgeous with the pickled veg. And finally the wasabi cashews on watercress pesto were the perfect pops of heat you wanted with all of this amazing food. What a dish.

Now on to the sweet treats. On the top tier was gluten free scones, clotted cream and jam- very traditional. The middle layer had a clementine sorbet, a polenta and orange cake, raspberries, pomegranate molasses and a coconut crumb. The bottom layer had a chocolate cake, a chocolate truffle, blueberries and a mini boozy milkshake. Everything was exceptional and all the right size so you didn't feel disgustingly full. I personally loved the milkshake and the polenta cake as well as the modern twist on the whole thing. So if you're looking for a unique tea for two, and one that's gluten free and veggie then Terre De Terre is the place to go, I am completely balled over by it.

With the rest of our time we moseyd about the laines and went in search of colourful houses and surprise surprise found a lot of them. Every house is unique, cute and clearly thought out. I love that Brighton has these gorgeous houses as it makes it an even cuter city, one I could consider living in some day.

This wasn't a wild trip away but just what I needed to kickstart my birthday week, so a massive thankyou to my lovely Amber for that. If you want to hear more about the tea for two or what streets we walked around, drop a comment below.

5 Cheese Shops Every Cheese-a-holic should head to

As someone who is obsessed with cheese I have spent a fair amount of time sussing out London's most fabulous cheese mongers. There are so many to bring up, but I thought I would go with the five that I return to most frequently. So at number 1: Paxton and Whitfield. Dating back to the 1700s, Paxton and Whitfield is London's oldest cheese shop and stocks amazing cheeses from around the world. I come here annually to buy cheese for Christmas day, and I am unashamed to admit it's probably one of my favorite expeditions of the year. They serve something for everyone from creamy goats cheese to smack you in the face blues. The range is extensive and the staff are happy to help you pick the perfect cheeses to match your pallet and the occasion. Number 2: La Fromagerie. Based in Highbury and Mayfair this cheese shop holds an authentic feel and is the first experience I'd had of a cheese shop. I go to the one in Highbury and Islington as it's local to me and I never...

Recipe of the Week: Taramasalata

As a new feature of my blog I've decided to write a recipe each week. These will vary in terms of if i'm trying to have a healthy week or an indulgent one so you'll certainly get an idea of what's in my food shop- but who doesn't love to be nosey ey? So kick starting the first weekend of 2018 my recipe of the week is homemade taramasalata! Ever since being diagnosed with coeliac I knew this would be the hardest thing to give up. When people ask me what I miss the most they probably expect to hear pizza or fresh bread but that isn't the case for me. Taramasalata is my favorite food ever and since I can't buy it in the shop anymore I've had to learn how to make it myself. For those who aren't familiar with what it is, it's basically a fresh greek dip made from smoked cod roe that is zesty, oniony and really smoky. As my friend Melina describes it it's 'greek caviar but better'; I must admit I agree with her.  The tricky part is...

Porto, Portugal

Ahhh Porto, where to begin? The people were lovely, the place was stunning and the food was exceptional. This was a much needed break after university and the realities of grad life. We started our trip flying with TAP Portugal which is one of the nicest airlines I've ever used.. we got free wine! Once we'd landed we got on the metro to our hotel in Balhou. Porto's metro is like a much nicer tube; it's spacious, air conned and very easy to understand. When coming up the stairs of Balhou station we were greeted by this stunning church (one I'd been hoping to see from my Instagram research) which was breathtaking and set a great tone for the holiday.  Our hotel was alright, but its location was why we chose it; it was nice to be in the heart of Porto and made travelling around so easy. On our first evening we went for a glass of wine (standard) and then a concert of Fado and Flamenco which offered a festive introduction to Portuguese culture. We then wen...
